Lancashire sees increase in burglaries but decrease in overall crime

Category: Burglary News | June 29, 2009

In just two months, the number of homes that have been broken into has increased by more than 10 %. The figures that were released by the police in Lancashire showed that in April and May, house burglaries in the county rose by 13.4 %.

Last year in April, house burglaries amounted to 382 while this year there were about 478 during the same time. This May saw 433 house burglaries compared to the 430 that occurred last year. Chief Constable Steve Finnigan, also revealed that the violent crime rate increased by 4.3 %, - five more cases - and assaults of a less serious nature went up by 1.3 %.

At a Lancashire Police Authority meeting, Mr. Finnigan said that even a small increase in numbers could result in a big increase in the percentage. He also said that burglary was a serious organised crime and that he could understand how devastating these incidents were for the victims. A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said that in July, a campaign will be launched to help reduce the number of home burglaries.

It would include high profile operational activity and creating awareness among residents based on ways to keep their homes safe. Homeowners have been constantly reminded about installing additional security like home safes in their homes to reduce the damage burglaries can cause. In addition to security safes, residents have also been warned about unlocked doors and windows and have been encouraged to stay alert.
