Residents being warned after a series of home burglaries

In just a few weeks, burglars have struck Scarborough about eight times. A number of homes off Stepney Road, Filey Road and Dean Road were the ones that were targeted in the sneak-in burglaries that occurred towards the end of last month. Most of these owners had left a door or window unsecured.

The reports of the burglaries have come just after a survey which was conducted by the Home Office. This survey showed the first rise of domestic burglary in six years. It reported over 280, 000 burglaries and increased the speculation that these incidents were a result of the recession and were putting homeowners at risk.

Co-ordinator of the Neighbourhood Watch area for Peasholm, Sue Rayner said that the credit crunch has created more temptation. There have been many sheds and homes being broken into and bikes being taken. Even visitors to Scarborough have been targeted and are being urged to be more cautious. Police said that a majority of the burglaries happened in the town’s North Bay area overnight.

Residents are being warned time and again about shutting and securing doors and windows properly to reduce the likelihood of being burgled. Sarah Blyth, a police constable who belongs to the priority crime team said that most of the burglaries have occurred on account of unlocked windows. She said that residents should lock their doors all the time, whether or not they are in the house. It is also important that unused windows in rooms should be kept locked.

The police and the Home Office are advising people to take simple steps to protect their homes and belongings. This includes locking doors and windows all the time and keeping wallets and keys away from eyesight. It is also advisable for homeowners to install home safes to secure valuables.
