New police squad to target west Cumbria burglars

Category: Burglary News | June 29, 2009

Cumbria police have decided to tackle the increased number of burglaries with a crack squad due to increasing financial crisis. The squad has been formed by a number of police and they met on the 26th of June for the first time. Dennis Kelly, Detective Inspector who is in charge of the disorder and burglary crime reduction partnership said that he is getting ready to prevent the burglars from striking again.

The news of the new squad has come just months after Chief Constable Craig Mackey, warned that there was more potential for thefts as money will become less available. Kelly said that even though the burglary rate is not all that much, he wants to solve the problem completely.

He said that they needed to use the correct people in the right places and at the right time in order to sort out some actions. He added that it can be a terrifying experience to get burgled and that security had to be provided to vulnerable people. In June itself, burglars struck homes in West Cumbria 23 times by getting in through unlocked windows and doors.

Kelly also said that people needed to be educated about security and securing their homes. With the rise in burglaries, residents have been warned about security measures and encouraged to use devices like security safes and alarms. While alarms can warn home dwellers about intruders, security safes can prevent any attempts to steal valuables.

Lancashire sees increase in burglaries but decrease in overall crime

Category: Burglary News

In just two months, the number of homes that have been broken into has increased by more than 10 %. The figures that were released by the police in Lancashire showed that in April and May, house burglaries in the county rose by 13.4 %.

Last year in April, house burglaries amounted to 382 while this year there were about 478 during the same time. This May saw 433 house burglaries compared to the 430 that occurred last year. Chief Constable Steve Finnigan, also revealed that the violent crime rate increased by 4.3 %, - five more cases - and assaults of a less serious nature went up by 1.3 %.

At a Lancashire Police Authority meeting, Mr. Finnigan said that even a small increase in numbers could result in a big increase in the percentage. He also said that burglary was a serious organised crime and that he could understand how devastating these incidents were for the victims. A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said that in July, a campaign will be launched to help reduce the number of home burglaries.

It would include high profile operational activity and creating awareness among residents based on ways to keep their homes safe. Homeowners have been constantly reminded about installing additional security like home safes in their homes to reduce the damage burglaries can cause. In addition to security safes, residents have also been warned about unlocked doors and windows and have been encouraged to stay alert.

A normal locking cabinet can hold all your personal belongings like files, documents and more, but it will not be able to protect them from robbery, theft or natural calamities. Security safes on the other hand can not only protect your belongings but will also make sure that they stay intact for years to come. Safes can provide total security against robberies and thefts and are very difficult to break open or damage. Many homes and businesses worldwide make use of safes in order to keep their personal items safe.

Home robberies have a duration of only three to five minutes. Thus the very fact that a security safe is present will have the robber in two minds. The more time a robber spends in a home, the higher the chances are of him getting caught. Therefore the mere presence of a safe is a deterring factor in a robbery or theft.

Safes also provide respite from any natural calamities like fire damage or flooding. Studies have revealed that eight businesses every hour are destroyed due to fire related incidents. Thus with a security safe, you can be sure that your business will be safe irrespective of a fire, earth quake or water damage.

Safes should be employed in any business that requires preservation of archives and documents. Safes not only fulfil the task of keeping undesirable elements out, but also give the owner a sense of security.
