Passerby places shop burglar under citizen’s arrest

An alert passerby arrested a burglar, when they were trying to smash a shop’s window. The burglar, Sarah O’Neil, 27 was allegedly making a hole in the shop window of Namaste Holistic Therapies in Upper High Street, Epsom to gain illegal entry.

As she was in the process of allegedly smashing the shop window, a 35-year-old man saw her and arrested her using the power of citizen’s arrest. A teenage accomplice of the girl then tried to intervene and release her.

Another passerby helped the 35-year-old man detain the woman, until police officers arrived.

The 35-year-old man, who does not wish to be identified, said that he knew something was not right when he saw a person kneeling down and trying to smash a hole in the shop window. So, in an effort to prevent the shop being burgled, he stopped the woman from running away by keeping hold of her.

He also said that the accomplice of the woman was trying to free her but was unsuccessful because of the timely help offered by the other passerby. Both men have been praised by the Epsom and Ewell neighbourhood police inspector for their efforts in maintaining the safety and security of Epsom’s streets.

To protect valuable items in your shop from burglary and prevent theft, it is imperative to have a security safe. The security safe can be used to keep cash and other valuables overnight and reduce the amount of loss during a burglary. Security safes with different cash and jewellery ratings are available in different shapes and sizes for all types of businesses.
