Protect your home from burglars this summer
Police have been urging residents to protect themselves from becoming victims of burglary. The number of burglaries has increased a great deal over the last few months and police say that it is mainly because of negligence on the part of homeowners during the summer months. Many people are leaving their homes unattended and unprotected which is why they are becoming easy to break in.
Since the July 1st seven unsecured homes in the region of Wellingborough have been burgled, five homes in Kettering and three homes in Corby. Statistics have shown that out of three burglars, one has managed to steal belongings from homes through open windows.
Sarah Blyth, a police constable who belongs to the priority crime team said that most of the burglaries have occurred on account of unlocked windows. She said that residents should lock their doors all the time, whether or not they are in the house. It is also important that unused windows in rooms should be kept locked.
The police and the Home Office are advising people to take simple steps to protect their homes and belongings. This includes locking doors and windows all the time and keeping wallets and keys away from eyesight. It is also advisable for homeowners to install home safes to secure valuables. Simple cabinets and cupboards are not enough to keep jewellery and money safe. Home safes are a much better option when it comes to protecting valuables.
