Residents being warned after a series of home burglaries

In just a few weeks, burglars have struck Scarborough about eight times. A number of homes off Stepney Road, Filey Road and Dean Road were the ones that were targeted in the sneak-in burglaries that occurred towards the end of last month. Most of these owners had left a door or window unsecured.

The reports of the burglaries have come just after a survey which was conducted by the Home Office. This survey showed the first rise of domestic burglary in six years. It reported over 280, 000 burglaries and increased the speculation that these incidents were a result of the recession and were putting homeowners at risk.

Co-ordinator of the Neighbourhood Watch area for Peasholm, Sue Rayner said that the credit crunch has created more temptation. There have been many sheds and homes being broken into and bikes being taken. Even visitors to Scarborough have been targeted and are being urged to be more cautious. Police said that a majority of the burglaries happened in the town’s North Bay area overnight.

Residents are being warned time and again about shutting and securing doors and windows properly to reduce the likelihood of being burgled. Installing locks, security alarms and security safes are amongst the precautions that need to be taken. Security alarms and locks will work well to keep burglars out and security safes are perfect for securing valuables.
