There are basically three common types for home and office use:

Fireproof safes
These safes are also called fire safes. Fire safes are specially constructed to keep the contents in the safe from extreme heat. Heat resistant safes are also available, but these only protect their contents to a certain extent. Fireproof safes are specially made to provide complete security to the items stored inside. These safes are specially used to store important documents like financial documents, property papers and so forth.

Depository safes
These kinds of safes are also known as drop safes. Drop safes or depositary safes are mostly used in banks and business organisations. Depository safes can be used to keep cash safe.

Media safes
Media safes are specially made to keep storage media like DVDs, CDs, USB drives and tapes safe. These types of safe are fire resistant to some extent and prevent damage to your stored data.

Before purchasing a safe, ask yourself what do you want keep in it and then purchase accordingly.
